Sorry Out of Gender - The Future Is Diverse

28th Annual Conference of the dvs Commission "Gender and Diversity Research" in Hanover from 7 to 9 November 2024

The scientific conference Sorry Out of Gender: The Future Is Diverse invites researchers and interested parties to take an interdisciplinary look at current developments, challenges and opportunities in the field of gender diversity and diversity in sport and sport science.

Researchers are invited to present their empirical work and theoretical considerations and to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of diversity and gender diversity from an intersectional perspective for the future of sport and sport science. The conference is aimed at (sports) scientists at all qualification levels and from all (sub-)disciplines, at (sports) teachers at all school levels, multipliers in organised popular and elite sport, both at the functional level and at the level of coaches.

Answers to current and future academic questions will be provided and new fields of research identified. In line with these intentions, not only binary gendered lines of difference will be addressed, but above all intersectionally entangled, non-binary, fluid identities. The conference will therefore also address the current challenging question of how a reconstruction of binaries can be avoided in research, i.e. how research can be promoted that does not form clearly defined identities and draw lines of difference, but rather understands these as contingent and thus not only strengthens gender diversity, but also diversity of all people and at the same time promotes scientific insights and alliances in practice.

In the spirit of a diverse and inclusive future, we invite you to include aspects from as many different perspectives and fields of research and practice as possible. Current empirical research findings are particularly important in order to comprehensively discuss the diversity of practices and research approaches in gender and diversity research. We also explicitly encourage the submission of contributions that highlight examples of best practice in order to promote a broad understanding of the diversity of sporting realities. To this end, as many aspects of diversity and gender as possible should be considered and discussed as cross-cutting topics in all sports science sub-disciplines. Possible topics in the following subject areas could include:

Sociology of sport

  • Diversity in organised sport: Successful practices and strategies for promoting diversity (in leadership positions) within sports associations, sports clubs and other forms of organisation as well as commercial sports providers.
  • Sport as a socially empowering tool: The importance of sport in promoting equality and anti-discrimination in social change, including by addressing group-related misanthropy in sport.
  • Diversity in sports marketing and sponsorship: Analyses of how brands and sponsors use or neglect diversity to appeal to consumers in campaigns.

Sports pedagogy and didactics

  • Stereotypes and prejudices in PE lessons: How should lessons be designed to take diversity and gender diversity into account?
  • Diversity and inclusion in PE curricula: What curricular content is an obstacle to ensuring inclusive lessons for all pupils?
  • Sports teacher and professionalisation research: How can the training of sports teachers be designed with regard to diversity in order to meet the requirements of inclusive physical education?

Sports history and politics

  • The role of sport in LGBTIQ* history: How has the perception and inclusion of LGBTIQ* athletes and issues evolved over time (nationally and internationally) and how has sport contributed to social acceptance?
  • Diversity and Sport for Sustainable Development: To what extent does the current discourse on sustainable development (SD) offer opportunities for marginalised groups to be legally and economically empowered and equalised in the long term?
  • Effects of guidelines and rules on gender diversity: Analysing the effects of rules and guidelines within (competitive) sport on the inclusion or exclusion processes of trans*, inter* and non-binary athletes.

Sport and training

  • Gendered problematisation in (high) performance sport: studies and scientific findings on differentiation in training methodology (e.g. cycle-based training) and the experiences of athletes and coaches, as well as findings from sports scientists.
  • Definitions of performance and gender: Which definitions of gender in relation to performance dominate the training science discourse? Which findings and questions are generated with which objectives?

Sports medicine and psychology

  • Sports medicine aspects of gender diversity in sport: To what extent do hormonal interventions influence the risk of injury and the regeneration processes of trans*, inter* and non-binary athletes?
  • "Gender-specific injury epidemiology and prevention" New findings on gender-differentiated injury risks and mental stress in performance training. A question of differentiated prevention?

In addition, further suggestions for topics are welcome, particularly in the area of critical scientific reflection on gender and diversity research in sport science. Based on this, the conference will take stock of the situation since the transformation process of the "Gender Studies" commission into the "Gender and Diversity Research" commission (2019), particularly from the perspective of intersectional approaches that cross lines of difference.

We encourage the submission of abstracts for oral presentations (20 min. + 10 min. discussion), panels (90 min.) or poster presentations (7 min. + 5 min. discussion)

Guidelines for the submission of conference papers

Proposals for contributions should include: The desired format, problem and research question, theoretical references, method, results and discussion. Abstracts (approx. 2,500 characters including spaces and punctuation) can be sent by email to: dvs-tagung-24@sportwiss.uni-hannover.de by 10 July 2024. Please use the dvs document template for manuscript design on our conference homepage as a guide when designing your abstract
